Is there a good way to self-chisel a partly broken tooth, so the edge is not so sharp? I'm out of work?

now, so if possible, I'd like to avoid going to my pricey dentist. I was having dinner last night when all of a sudden, I felt something hard and then spat out a piece of chipped tooth. I wouldn't mind it so much but now the tooth has a somewhat sharp edge which is bothersome at times to the side of my tongue - the tooth itself is by the molar area. Is there any way I myself can dull the edge (by say eating hearty food, like a sandwich or steak)? Thanks.

A chipped tooth means inner dental enamel is exposed to air, bacteria and discoloration. A previous poster is correct, your normal eating will eventually file it down. DO NOT USE A NAIL FILE!! You are not a dentist. You could also purchase dental wax (for braces usually) and cover the sharp point until your cheek, tongue heals. I would also call you dentist and ask what to do with a chipped tooth OTHER than an office visit. And by the way....don't mess around with your dental health; tooth extraction is ALOT more expensive than an office visit for a quick filing done by your dentist. Good luck!
Reply:nail file
Reply:I had a similar problem once before...I chewed on ice cubes until the pointed part broke of.
Reply:Fine grit wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a suitable implement. Rinse and spit a lot. It won't take much work to take the hard edge off rightaway. You'd be surprised.

Just be mindful of adjacent healthy enamel and/or soft tissue.

BTW, in time simple mechanical wear will minimize the sharpness, also, your mouth/tongue'll kinda get 'used to it'.
