My dentist will be put a temporary plastic cap on my broken tooth. What is the procedure for this? Painful?

This is called a temporary crown. After reshaping the tooth and an impression is made, dentist will make a temporary crown to cover and protect the prepared tooth while the crown is being made. Temporary crowns usually are made of acrylic and are held in place using a temporary cement. There should be no pain and local anesthesia is usually not needed in THIS procedure (local anesthesia is needed for prep and impression). Because temporary dental crowns are just that – a temporary fix until a permanent crown is ready, try to avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods.

Your dentist will give you a local anesthetic, so you shouldn't feel anything but a bit of pressure.
Reply:The temporary is no big deal. When they put on the permanent crown, they will use novacaine because they have to drill away part of the broken tooth to fit on the crown. The only thing that hurts (a little) is the needle for the novacaine. And the bill afterwards...ouch!
Reply:If the tooth isn't broken into the nerve, it's not uncomfortable at all. If it is, you'll feel a little stick when the dentist numbs you up, but the relief is worth it. Piece of cake.

No. It won't be painful. He/she will be using local anesthetics to properly anesthetize your tooth and surrounding gingiva.
