What happens to the root from an extracted baby tooth that is broken off and is still enbedded in the gums?

My daughter has her baby tooth pulled, and we saw the long roots.Which one of the roots was broken, and we assume it is still embedded in her gums. The teeth pulled were the left decidous first molar and the the left decidous cuspid.Should we worry?Thank you to all the dentists out there.

Generally there is no real concern if a baby tooth root is left in the gum.

Let's divide the answer into two:

(1) If the extracted tooth were infected, the shorter root may not be broken, but in fact be resorbing, or being eaten away, by the infection. If that is the case, better the tooth is out.

(2) If the extracted tooth were not infected, as the subsequent adult tooth erupts, it will eat up the root on the way out, or force it into an area where it can be removed easily.

Good luck, and congratulate your daughter because she must have been very brave to have that procedure done!
Reply:Some times a root will come out by itself, but it should at least be monitored with exrays. Probably will have to be extracted.
Reply:Not a dentist, but if it were my child, I would keep an eye on where the tooth was pulled to make sure it isn't infected. Any sign of infection and see the dentist immediately.
Reply:It will prob come out, dentist should re-check.
Reply:my son had the same thing happen. They pulled out his tooth and left some of the root in his gums. I brought him to a different dentist than the one who pulled it out and he said it would be fine, to check it periodically and see if it gets infected. The only problem he said it could cause is the other 2 teeth growing closer together cause theres no tooth there to seperate them but the chances of that arent that good. The only thing he was concerned about is that an infection occurs. Its been 2 months and the tooth is fine.
